Wanting to ‘make it’ Vs Not knowing what to do

This title for me has been one of the most difficult to dissect. Everyone in the world wants to ‘make it’ the vagueness in the dream is real. If you are a musician you want to make it as an artist, or a writer, or a singer etc. If you are a painter, you want to make it by being recognised by a person of influence or have your work highlighted in a gallery etc.

Now say if you don’t know what you want to do, yet you still want to ‘make it’ i.e. have a substantial amount of money, help your family, buy a house/car, live in a certain country. You want to MAKE IT but you don’t have a talent, a Degree or practical experience, what do you do?

The world like the work world is built in categories, it’s like in school when you are asked to pick a subject for your GCSE’s or in University when you are looking for a degree, you feel you have to pick a subject you like. What if you do not like anything you have been taught? What if you do not see yourself making money via a subject?  You feel stuck, lost, you start to think something must be wrong with you because everyone has SOMETHING they like, a field that they are good at, a job they can work and stay in for long term that will help them accomplish their dreams.

We are never told to CREATE what we like, are we? We are never told to take AS MUCH TIME to find the qualities about us individually that we like to express, to research the endless opportunities or creative ideas the world is missing out on.

Story time: I met a woman in 2012, she hated academics and was not into sports or the arts, many people would argue she did not have an actual talent. She left school and travelled the world, mainly parts of Asia, she fell in love with Fabrics and decided to set up a manufacturing business for women clothing – she never looked back.

After a general chat and finding out loads of cool things that she had done with her life, she turned to me and asked me what I do for a living and my natural response was ‘I work’ she laughed. I obviously got defensive and asked her what was so funny. She calmly answered: “Well everyone works but clearly you do not value enough what you do to rave about it to a stranger like I just did”

Her words stuck with me for what seemed like forever as I tried to understand why I was happy with just saying ‘I work’.  I now realise that I believed just working was an accomplishment, irrespective of whether I liked what I did or not. THAT WAS WRONG, I may not wake up tomorrow and that would be my story ‘I worked’. It was time to change, stop being lazy and create my TALENT.

I want everyone that may not have a ‘worldly’ recognised talent to read this and know that it is okay to not know what you want, or what makes you happy, or what can make you ‘RICH’ but also know that it is NOT OKAY to not do anything about it. TAKE YOUR TIME but with every minute use it to find your TALENT, create your own TALENT, create your own FIELD, create your own expertise, create your own way of ‘making it’ because making it is so much more than 50,000 likes on Instagram, or the newest car, or free things being sent to you. MAKING IT is being happy with your everyday efforts, being happy with your choices and being able to proudly profess what it is that you do, and to never just say ‘YOU WORK’

It is hard but is it not harder to end your days with no real happiness and then be blessed to wake up to no real change?

From yours truly,
