Mama Africa Part two – Identity

Identity,

A short yet powerful noun

That captures many segments

Many ups & Many downs

You feel your identity is unique

Until you reach the motherland

And they label you a sheep

For following the cultures of the land where you sleep

Instead of researching your ancestor’s approach in

Their speech, their clothing, their teachings.

How they have accomplished peace in an area where havoc has wreaked in.

Bold colours, warm and soft fabric touch their skins

As they bath in scorching heat, carrying fruit and wheat

Barrels of water upon their backs as their journeys strengthen their mind and feet.

How could they do all this with full length Sheed’s (Baati’s/Dresses)?

They answer:

Our god has given us such beautiful covers

To hide our womanly treasures

To protect our skin from disastrous weathers

We are more beautiful because the colours resemble our light and aspirations,

The motherland knows no struggle’s but blessings & lessons

As we are showered with powers.

Our tongue is short of negativity

Our laughter overpowers the noise of poverty

Our faith mixed with the above is what keeps our breath and hearts young.

We hope you can join us one day, in rebuilding this generous land our creator has made.

A short yet powerful noun,

Strength and courage is what my identity is built upon now.

The same segments that my Kings and Queens passed down.
